The Civil Merit Medal (Zivil-Verdienstmedaille) was instituted by the Council of the Republic of San Marino on 22 March 1860 in gold, silver and bronze. It may be awarded for all outstanding services rendered to the state, as well as for special achievements in the fields of charity, science and the arts. The Military Merit Medal was also instituted on the same date.
The octagonal medal bears the inscription MERITO (Merit) at its centre and is encircled by an oak-leaf wreath tied together at the bottom. The reverse shows the republic’s coat of arms resting on crossed flags, spears, rifles, sabres and drums, surmounted by a crown, with the words REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO running around the upper semicircle.
The decoration is worn on a sky-blue ribbon with red edge stripes on the left breast.
