The Commemorative Medal for Duke Charles Edward’s Assumption of Government (Herinneringsmedaille aan de Regeringsovername door Hertog Karel Eduard; German: Erinnerungsmedaille an den Regierungsübernahme durch Herzog Carl Eduard) was a commemorative medal instituted in 1930 by Duke Charles Edward of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The ruler, who had been forced to abdicate in 1918, commemorated his assumption of government in 1905.
Duke Charles Edward, deposed in November 1918, continued to award some of the decorations he had instituted even after his abdication, and even after Saxe-Coburg and Gotha ceased to exist as a state. One example was the Swords on the Ring of the Duke Charles Edward Medal, introduced in 1935. The awarding of high ranks in the Saxe-Ernestine House Order to his comrades in the SS was highly controversial. Hitler eventually put an end to this practice by issuing a decree in 1935 prohibiting Germans from accepting decorations from the former German ruling houses.
A commemorative medal is a decoration awarded on important occasions. Such medals are often awarded to princes of ruling houses, whose members also wear them at various events.
