The Gareth Jones Medal (Медаль Ґарета Джонса) is a non-governmental award established to honour and recognize journalists, publishers, scholars and patrons for their significant contribution to research into the Ukrainian Holodomors, high professional skill, and assistance in restoring the historical truth about the tragic pages of Ukraine’s past. A journalist’s mission is to convey this truth to their readers. This is the main goal and standard of journalism. Gareth Jones, a Welsh-born Briton, was such a journalist: in the 1930s he told the world the truth about what was happening in Ukraine, when information about it was being suppressed not only in communist countries but also in the West. Therefore, the motto of the Gareth Jones Award is “Truth and Honour.” In the view of the award’s initiators, the work of a number of scholars and researchers of those tragic pages of history who have received the award meets precisely these criteria.
The Academic Council of the Institute of Journalism at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv decides on the selection of candidates. Its members are renowned journalists and scholars.
