Order "For Intellectual Courage"

The Order “For Intellectual Courage” (Орден «За інтелектуальну відвагу») is a silver order presented annually by the Chapter of the independent cultural journal Yi (Журнал «Ї») at its traditional annual pre-New Year event, “The Year’s End” (“Межа Року”). As of 1 May 2021, there are 46 recipients of the order.

The idea for the “For Intellectual Courage” distinction belongs to Taras Vozniak, editor-in-chief of Yi journal, and Oles Pohраничний, a member of the Yi journal editorial staff and a journalist. The idea originated in 1995.

The Chapter of Yi journal states that it does not “present” the order, but asks nominees to accept it as an expression of respect and gratitude for their actions, as well as recognition of the nominee’s importance to Ukraine’s intellectual community.

There are two types of distinction awarded by the Chapter of Yi journal: the Order “For Intellectual Courage” and the “For a Good Deed” distinction.

Since 2001, the head of the Chapter of Yi journal has been Oles Pohраничний.
