The Simon Petliura Cross (Хрест Симона Петлюри), or the Order of Simon Petliura, is an award of the Army of the Ukrainian Republic and later became the highest state award of the Government of the Ukrainian People’s Republic in exile. Initially, it was a commemorative miniature badge dating from 1926. In 1974, the award was granted the status of an order. The first award was made on 10 May 1936 in Warsaw, and the last on 10 April 1977 in the United States.
The award could be received by participants in the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1921. The award’s design was created by Colonel Mykola Bytynsky. A total of 3,515 awards of the Simon Petliura Cross are known to have been made. The order could be awarded during the recipient’s lifetime or posthumously.
