The Air Force Commendation Medal is a Commendation Medal of the United States Armed Forces, awarded for sustained military merit in direct contact with the enemy when the Bronze Star is not applicable.
All the military branches have their own Commendation Medal; since 1958, the Air Force Commendation Medal has been intended for military service in the United States Air Force.
The first Commendation Medals were awarded by the United States Navy and the United States Coast Guard in 1943, and by the Army in 1949 as service ribbons; they were not full-fledged medals until 1960.
Multiple awards of the Air Force Commendation Medal are represented by gold or silver oak leaf clusters.
In the Order of Precedence, Commendation Medals rank below the Aerial Achievement Medal and above the Achievement Medals.
