The ONUCA Medal is one of the United Nations Peacekeeping Medals.
ONUCA is the abbreviation for the United Nations Observer Group in Central America, one of the peacekeeping operations in Central America. The United Nations wanted to ensure that individual states did not support insurgents and guerrilla fighters in other countries. The ONUCA mission also monitored the ceasefire in Nicaragua.
The mandate lasted from November 1989 to January 1992. Dutch participants were eligible for the Commemorative Medal for United Nations Peace Operations. The Secretary-General of the United Nations awarded the ONUCA Medal to the participating military personnel and police officers.
They received the bronze medal on a ribbon combining medium blue with the light blue of the United Nations flag. A narrow vertical dark blue stripe is placed between the two shades of blue.
