People’s Writer of Belarus (Народный писатель Беларуси; Belarusian: Народны пісьменнік Беларусі) is an honorary title awarded to writers for outstanding contributions to the development of Belarusian literature. It was established by a Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Byelorussian SSR of March 27, 1956. Since 1994, it has been awarded by the President of the Republic of Belarus.
The honorary title “People’s Writer of the Byelorussian SSR” was awarded to prose writers, poets, playwrights, and translators who had created ideologically elevated works of art and literary scholarship that had received wide recognition, and who had actively participated in public life and in bringing together and enriching one another’s literatures among the peoples of the USSR.
