The Medal for Valor (Médaille de la Vaillance) of the Republic of Cameroon is a decoration for courage.
The medal is awarded to members of the armed forces, the police and the national gendarmerie, and exceptionally also to others who have distinguished themselves during military operations or the maintenance of public order. The medal is awarded regardless of rank, position or nationality.
Military commanders may award the medal posthumously on the battlefield to those killed in action, and may also award it to the wounded. The award must subsequently be confirmed.
The medal may also be awarded collectively to a military unit or community whose members have almost all taken part in the same “brilliant action”.
The award of the Medal for Valor is accompanied by a diploma and entitles the recipient to a device worn on the ribbon. This device is a gold palm for services to the nation, a silver palm for services to the armed forces, and a gold star for services to the army, national security or the police. The awarding of such palms and stars is a French tradition also found with the Croix de Guerre.
