The Decoration for Merit in the Red Cross [Vyznamenání za zásluhy o Červený kříž] was established on 17 August 1914 by Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Red Cross. The decoration was intended to be awarded to persons who had earned merit in the field of the monarchy’s Red Cross volunteer service in peacetime or wartime.
