The Medal of Merit (Hanover) (Verdienstmedaille (Hannover)) was instituted in two classes in 1831 by King William IV of Hanover and could be awarded to all persons for services to the fatherland.
The round medal, made of gold or silver, shows the founder’s head facing left, with the inscription WILHELM IV. KÖNIG 1831. On the reverse, within a laurel wreath tied together at the bottom, is the three-line inscription VERDIENST UMS VATERLAND.
The name and rank of the honored holder were engraved on the edge of the medal.
The award was worn on the light blue ribbon of the Guelph Order on the left breast.
