The National Defence Cross (Landesverteidigungskreuz; Hungarian: Polgári Honvédelmi Érdemkereszt) was instituted in three classes on 1 March 1944 by Regent and Head of State Miklós Horthy. It was intended only for Hungarian civilians who had distinguished themselves through their zeal and willingness to make sacrifices in service of national defence.
