The Operational Service Badge [אות השירות המבצעי] is an IDF badge awarded to soldiers (combat personnel or combat-support personnel) or Border Police officers who have served in a unit with an activity level of A or A+ for at least 18 months, including at least four months in qualifying areas. The badge began to be distributed during the War of Attrition (1968–1970). It is worn on the right pocket flap of the Class A uniform shirt.
The badge was derisively nicknamed “Pazgaz,” because of its resemblance to the Pazgaz company logo and the fact that it was awarded to rear-echelon soldiers and combat-support personnel simply for serving in the sector, while combat soldiers were not eligible for the badge, even if they had not actually participated in combat. A version exists (possibly not officially approved) for transport drivers, with an elephant added against the background of the flame.
Eligibility for this badge is noted on the military discharge certificate, along with eligibility for campaign ribbons and decorations.
