The Medal for Meritorious Service in the Arts was established by the Italian Government by Law No. 975 of 1939, amended by Law No. 844 of 1940, and was intended “for persons and institutions which, through works of recognized value, distinguished services, and substantial donations, have acquired particular merit... in the dissemination and advancement of national culture and education.”
The recognition consisted of a diploma of merit in first, second, or third class, which authorized the recipient to wear, respectively, the gold, silver, or bronze medal.
The same law also established the merit award for public education and the Star of Merit for Schools.
By Law No. 1093 of 1950, the recognition was abolished and replaced by the Medal for Meritorious Service in Schools, Culture, and the Arts.
