The Aeronautical Merit Medal (Medaglia al merito aeronautico) is a decoration instituted by the Italian Republic in 1966, with the aim of rewarding activities and studies directed toward the development and progress of aviation, particularly Italian aviation, as well as individual actions that have brought honor and distinction to Italian aviation.
The law instituting it abolished the Commemorative Medal for Aeronautical Achievements.
Legislative Decree No. 66 of 15 March 2010 repealed (Article 2268) the 1966 law establishing the award and instituted the award anew (Article 1439), with minor changes.
The medal may be awarded in gold, silver or bronze, according to the varying importance of the activities or actions being rewarded, to Italian and foreign citizens, and to commands, corps or organizations.
