The Navy Medal for Valor (Medaglia al valor di Marina) was instituted by the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1836; together with the Medal for Military Valor, created by royal patent of 26 March 1833, and the Medal for Civil Valor, established by royal decree of 30 April 1851, it was intended to reward citizens who showed courage and self-sacrifice.
Through various reforms of the regulations, the decoration has remained in force, both after the unification of the Kingdom of Italy and after the establishment of the Italian Republic, and it still exists today among the armed force medals for valor regulated in 2010.
