This Military Merit Medal was instituted on 16 May 1832 by Prince Paul Alexander Leopold II of Lippe and at first was awarded almost exclusively to officers. On 25 October 1908, the medal with silver swords on the ribbon was instituted. It was then also open to other ranks and non-commissioned officers.
