The War Honor Medal was instituted on 25 October 1915 by Prince Leopold IV of Lippe as an award for the care of the wounded.
The badge could be awarded to all persons who had earned notable merit for public welfare through faithful work in official or voluntary service, particularly in caring for wounded and sick soldiers and in other work for the Red Cross.
The badge is an octagonal medal made of gunmetal and depicts the War Merit Cross on the obverse. The reverse bears the inscription FAITHFULLY PROVEN IN A DIFFICULT TIME 1915.
The medal was worn on a golden-yellow ribbon with a red and white edge stripe for services in enemy territory, and on a white ribbon with a red and golden-yellow edge stripe for services at home.
Following the abdication of Prince Leopold IV on 11 November 1918, the order was no longer awarded.
