The Medal of Honour (Ehrenmedaille) was instituted by Decree No. 296 on 5 February 1894 by Prince Albert I of Monaco and is awarded for exceptional civil and military services to the Principality.
The round medal, awarded in three classes (gold or gilt silver, silver, bronze), is encircled by a dense laurel wreath. At its centre it depicts the bust of the reigning prince, facing right. The corresponding inscription runs around a ring; on the first issue, it reads ALBERT I · PRINCE DE MONACO (Albert I Prince of Monaco). On the reverse, the word DEVOIR appears at the centre, with PTE DE MONACO in the upper half of the ring and 5 FEVRIER 1894 in the lower half.
The decoration is worn on the left breast on a red-and-white ribbon.
