The “Bene Merentibus” Medal (Latin: “To Those Well Deserving”) [Medal „Bene Merentibus”] was established in 1738 by King Augustus III of Poland. Alongside the Order of the White Eagle (awarded only to the upper social classes), it was the second decoration of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth to be awarded to members of the lower social classes for their services. The medal was presented on the king’s name day, that is, 3 August.
