The Medal for Participation in the Defensive War of 1939 (Medal „Za udział w wojnie obronnej 1939”) was a Polish commemorative state decoration established by an Act of 3 July 1981 as an expression of recognition for people who took an active part in the defensive war waged by Poland against the German invader from 1 September to 6 October 1939.
It was created as an attempt to win the favor of a society demanding the truth after 1980. Like the Warsaw Insurrection Cross, established at the same time for a similar purpose, it could be awarded posthumously, as well as to citizens of other countries who held Polish citizenship at the time of the events it commemorated. This medal was also the first decoration of the Polish People’s Republic to feature an image of a crowned military eagle.
