The Star of Perseverance (Gwiazda Wytrwałości; Zakroczym Star) is a historical Polish insurrectionary honorary decoration dating from 1831. It was not incorporated into the system of orders and decorations of the Second or Third Polish Republic. Since 1981, it has been a private decoration awarded by a chapter whose identity is not clearly specified.
The Star of Perseverance was established by a resolution of the Sejm of the Kingdom of Poland on 18 September 1831 in Zakroczym, on the motion of Professor Joachim Lelewel. It was intended as a distinction “for those who fought for the national cause to the last drop of blood and persevered to the end beneath its banners,” as expressed by the Latin motto shown on the decoration: Usque ad finem.
The decoration was to be awarded to those who demonstrated particular bravery, not only in the struggle for independence, but also by preserving Polish identity in the broadest sense.
