The Military Order of Avis is the oldest Portuguese honorary order, which inherited its name from the Order of Saint Benedict of Avis after the latter’s creation. It is awarded to recognize distinguished military service and is therefore reserved exclusively for officers of the Portuguese Armed Forces and the National Republican Guard, as well as military units, bodies, establishments, and corps.
