The Commemorative Cross for the 1866 Campaign was founded on 22 May 1867 by King Johann of Saxony and awarded to all soldiers of the country who had taken part in the German War against Prussia in 1866 or who had served in the garrison of Königstein Fortress during that period.
The bronze cross bears in its center the crowned and intertwined letters J R (Johann Rex), enclosed by an oak wreath. The reverse likewise bears the year 1866, enclosed by an oak wreath.
Combatants received the decoration on a yellow ribbon with three light-blue side stripes, and non-combatants on a yellow ribbon with four light-blue side stripes. The decoration was worn on the left breast.
