King Oscar II’s Medal of Merit was a Norwegian royal distinction instituted in connection with the coronation of King Oscar II as King of Norway at Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim in 1873. The medal was awarded for services to the Royal House, art, science, literature, and so on. It was awarded in very limited numbers and was considered exceptionally exclusive. It was awarded to both Norwegian and foreign citizens. Women were also awarded King Oscar II’s Medal of Merit. It was last awarded in 1902. The medal was one of several medals of merit instituted by Oscar II.
