The Military Merit Medal [Militärverdienstmedaille], also called the Württemberg Medal for Bravery [Württembergische Tapferkeitsmedaille], was instituted in 1794 by Duke Ludwig Eugen of Württemberg and was intended exclusively to recognize officers for outstanding bravery in the face of the enemy. In 1800, the medal, originally issued in only one grade (silver), was divided into silver and gold grades and was awarded until the end of the monarchy in Württemberg in 1918. In 1806, the decoration was also made available to enlisted men and non-commissioned officers, and from that point onward it could be awarded to officers only up to the rank of first lieutenant.
