The Mother’s Day Decoration is the First Class Medal with Golden Crosses of the Order of the White Rose of Finland, awarded on Mother’s Day. It has been awarded since 1946, with the president of the republic making the awards on the recommendation of the orders. The president personally presents them on Mother’s Day at the House of the Estates in Helsinki.
Recipients of the decoration are generally mothers of large families, but since 1997 the number of children has no longer been among the most important criteria for its award. The decoration may also be awarded to other educators who have done significant work for the benefit of children and young people. A biological, adoptive, or foster mother aged 40 or older may be nominated. However, the decoration is not awarded to people who work as educators in their profession. A man has received it once; today it is awarded only to women.
Children or organizations may nominate candidates for the decoration. At least two organizations or associations must endorse an application made by a family. Until 1992, the official nominations for decorations were made and the celebration organized by the Family Federation of Finland.
