The Commemorative Medal for Special Service Commissions of the Portuguese Armed Forces, established on 28 May 1946, is intended to reward military personnel who, whether or not serving in formed national or multinational forces, have completed service missions abroad.
Initially, this decoration was incorporated into the Commemorative Medal for the Campaigns of the Portuguese Armed Forces of 1946, differing in its ribbon, which was white with red edges, and was awarded “in cases involving simple expeditions or actions of any kind in which the circumstances did not require the conduct of war operations” (Article 43 of the 1946 Regulations).
This medal is awarded to soldiers and sailors who participate in multinational forces under NATO, the UN and the EU, as well as in technical-military cooperation.
