The Ancient and Most Noble Military Order of the Tower and Sword, of Valor, Loyalty and Merit is Portugal’s highest honour, having been established by King Afonso V in 1459. It was renewed by John VI, while Prince Regent, on 13 May 1808, and by Pedro IV, also while Regent of the Kingdom, on 28 July 1832. It was the only order of honour to remain continuously active, even during the period from 1910 to 1917–18, when the other military orders were abolished. It is currently awarded by decree of the President of the Republic.
The Military Order of the Tower and Sword is one of Europe’s oldest and most exclusive orders of honour. It may be awarded only for exceptionally distinguished merit in the organs of sovereignty or in command of troops in the field; for military or civic heroism; or for selflessness and sacrifice for the homeland or for humanity.
The Military Order of the Tower and Sword has six grades: Grand Collar (special grade), Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight. For heroic deeds in the field, the decoration is awarded with a palm.
