Order of the Republic

The Order of the Republic (Орден Републике; Macedonian: Орден на Републиката, Slovenian: Red republike) was a decoration of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in three classes.

The Order of the Republic, First, Second, and Third Class, was established by Josip Broz Tito, President of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia, on 2 July 1960 as a decoration for civilian merit. The decoration was awarded to individuals, institutions, and socio-political organizations for “personal merits in the field of public activity that contribute to the general progress of the country.” This wording meant that the Order, too, was awarded primarily to political figures. The Law on Amendments to the Law on Decorations of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia of 1 March 1961 changed the Order’s name, after which it had the following classes:

Order of the Republic with a Gold Wreath (formerly the Order of the Republic, 1st Class) — 10th in the order of precedence of Yugoslav decorations.

Order of the Republic with a Silver Wreath (formerly the Order of the Republic, 2nd Class) — 18th in the order of precedence of Yugoslav decorations.
