The Defence Medal for the Fallen and Wounded in Service [Forsvarets medalje for Faldne og Sårede i Tjeneste] was a medal awarded by the Danish Defence to military or civilian employees who, while on duty, had lost their lives or been physically or psychologically wounded as a result of combat, terrorist attacks, or accidents. The medal was instituted on 30 October 1996 and awarded until 2010, when it was replaced by two separate medals, one for the fallen and one for the wounded. The medal was awarded as personal property and therefore did not have to be returned after the recipient’s death if it had been awarded to someone wounded in service.
For multiple awards, the medal for the wounded was awarded with silver or gold oak leaves for the second and third awards, respectively.
The medal was also awarded to soldiers and civilians who had performed meritorious service and had been wounded or fallen in the process.
