The Danish Defence Medal for International Service (Forsvarets Medalje for International Tjeneste) was instituted in 2010 in recognition of civilian and military personnel in the Danish Defence who have served on an international mission, and is awarded by the Chief of Defence. The medal may also be awarded to other Danes and foreigners who have made a particularly meritorious international contribution on behalf of Denmark. The medal is typically presented at the same time as the corresponding mission medal from, for example, NATO.
Until 2010, the year's deployed personnel received the Defence Medal—which was actually intended for meritorious service outside the country's borders—in recognition of their participation in an international operation. In 2007, the need was recognized for a number of medals to replace this medal in various respects, including for international service. In 2015, the Danish Defence Medal for International Service 1948–2009 was established in recognition of Danish Defence personnel who had participated in an international mission during the period 1948–2009.
