The Medal for Distinguished Air Service is a Danish medal instituted on May 30, 1962. The medal may be awarded to pilots or other crew members after a long and distinguished career that has served as an inspiring example to others, or for meritorious service on a single occasion under particularly critical conditions, especially for saving human life and property through a cool-headed and daring effort in which no undue risk was taken to the life or physical well-being of oneself or crew members.
The medal is awarded by royal resolution on the recommendation of the Minister of Defence.
The medal is round, made of silver, and its obverse is stamped with King Frederik IX’s monogram, surrounded by the text “For Distinguished Air Service”. The reverse is stamped with the text “Deserved”. The medal is suspended from a red-and-white diagonally striped cross ribbon. If the medal is awarded a second time, the insignia of the relevant service is attached to a silver clasp on the medal’s cross ribbon; unlike other medals, this medal may be worn with civilian clothing on ceremonial occasions.
The medal was designed by medallist Harold Simonsen and is struck by the Royal Mint.
