The Commemorative Medal for the Centenary of the Birth of King Frederick IX (“Mindemedaillen i Anledning af Hundredeårsdagen for Kong Frederik IX”) was instituted on 8 March 1999 by Margrethe II of Denmark. She instituted the commemorative medal to mark what would have been the centenary of the birth of her father and predecessor to the Danish throne. Frederick IX of Denmark reigned from 1947 to 1974. The silver commemorative medal was awarded to 21 members of the Royal Family and 110 members of the royal household. Recipients may place the letters M.M.11.marts 1899-1999 after their names.
The obverse of the medal depicts the late king in full dress. The inscription around the edge reads “FREDERICK IX KONGEN AF DANMARK”.
Men wear the medal on the left breast, suspended from a red ribbon folded into a pentagon, with a white cross woven into it.
Awards marking the centenary of the birth of a Danish king have been struck and awarded in Denmark since 1918. To date, this has happened four times.
