The Cross for Merit in the Defence of the State (Záslužný kríž obrany štátu) was a state award of the First Slovak Republic from 1939 to 1942.
It was established in 1939 by the president of the First Slovak Republic, J. Tiso.
It was intended to reward civilians for their “invaluable contribution to strengthening the defence capability of their country”.
The cross had two classes. The insignia differed only in their metal: the 1st Class was silver, and the 2nd Class was bronze.
More than 120 awards were made. About 20 awards of the 1st Class cross were made, and about 100 of the 2nd Class.
The award was abolished in December 1942.
