The Order of Merit in the Fields of Defense and Security (Орден за заслуге у областима одбране и безбедности) was a decoration of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro in three classes. The Order was established on 4 December 1998 with the adoption of the Law on Decorations of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. It had three classes and was awarded for exceptional dedication in the performance of duties and the execution of tasks in the defense and security of the homeland. The Order’s design is a slightly modified version of the Order of Military Merit, which was among the decorations of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Its ribbons, however, were adopted in their entirety from the Order of Military Merit. It was awarded by the President of the Republic, and later by the President of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. It was awarded most frequently after the NATO aggression against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in June 1999.
