The Prince Pribina Order was established in 1940 by President of the State Jozef Tiso as the highest order of the First Slovak Republic and was named after the medieval Slovak prince Pribina. It served as a reward for civilian and military merits and was awarded to both domestic and foreign recipients.
Following the occupation of the country by the Red Army and the resulting end of the republic, the order was no longer awarded from May 1945.
